Prof Karl Goran Maeler was the Guru of Ecological economics to many of us. He will be remembered over generations for his pioneering contribution in theory and inter-disciplinarity in applied work. My deep respect for the departed soul.
Time spent with him was filled with love, laughter and knowledge. Memories of his friendship and love will forever warm my heart, I will miss you Karl Goran.
We lost an outstanding environmental economist with innovative thinking with Professor Maler passing away. He has been supporter of many research and teaching programmes in environmental economics in the developing world. I have worked with him for more than ten years as a co resource person in the SANDEE programmes. He was a source of inspiration and strength to young scholars of environmental and resource economics in the developing world. Let us pray God to provide all the strength to his family to face this loss.
Greatest loss to all scientists working on ecology and environment! Karl was pioneer to develop a method of adjusted national income accounts, taking into the damages parted out to all natural capital. He was one of the founders of SANDEE. He was the director of Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. He also served as a member of Noble Price Committee on Economics. Karl was a great friend of India. He had attended several conferences of INSEE. Between SANDEE, INSEE and Govt of India MOEF, we should try to establish a Chair in some academic institutions.

Salute to him for creating a platform for Environmental Economists to explore possibilities of better life. He will always be there in the form of SANDEE.

I had the opportunity to interact with Prof. Maler personally and also in SANDEE R & Ts.I found him sitting quietly at a corner when researchers used to present their progress report and findings in R & Ts. He would listen quietly but very carefully what we presented and gave his comments to improve our research methodology and results/findings. We would come back to next R &T (in my case it was in Sri Lanka), by incorporating all his suggestions and would present again before him. If He was satisfied he would give a nod very silently and that would make us understand that we have passed MALER TEST. We have always considered passing MALER TEST to be a great achievement as a researcher and to make him satisfied by doing revision/modification in our SANDEE work was a real tough job. He was very witty and always put on a smile to make things easy. As a SANDEE research associate, I am very sad hearing the news of his sad demise. I would always remember him and would try to implement his teachings in my own way.
Thank you professor for giving insight and knowledge to understand about environmental economics and development during SANDEE summer school in 2013.. Your lesson and dedication to the field will continue to inspire me and many of us in the days to come. I will miss him dearly.
I learnt a lot from Professor Karl-Göran Mäler as a participant of the SANDEE summer school in 2012. Over a span of 2 weeks, not only did I enjoy his engaging classes but was really influenced by his simplicity, and calmness. He was so patient as he heard everyone's thoughts. I take a life lesson from interactions with him, stay humble and grounded, even though you grow in knowledge, the other person always has something of relevance to share.
Thank you Professor. May peace be with you.
Nunca me recuerdes si me sabes muerto,

I am grieved at the loss of Karl-Goran Maler whose single handed contributions have made the discipline of Ecological Economics of what it is today. His is a life well lived and well served. May his soul find peace. Om Shanti!
I am greatly grieved and can feel a silent vacuum now, to understand the peaceful demise of a great Soul, Professor Karl-Göran Mäler, Whom I respect and regard as one of my Inspiring Gurus on Sustainability.
On his invitation, I was fortunate enough to join an international seminar on Sustainability Indicators at Swedish Academy of Science, Stockholm, Sweden, perhaps in November, 2002. I was working in Environment & Forest Division of Planning Commission at that time and was engaged in developing sustainability indicators for India, for a Project, supported by the World Bank. This seminar was solely organized by him, probably after he was awarded the prestigious Volvo Environment Award, 2002. If I recall correct, Prof Partha Dasgupta had also shared this award with him. Prof Karl Maler was a Professor at Stockholm School of Economics and was working largely on Resource Economics. I had the great opportunity of meeting and discussing on various issues and matters related to Natural Resources Accounting, more than a dozen of occasions, and always have shared valuable insights from his knowledge and wisdom. I would always remember him for inspiring me professionally as well as at the personal front.
May his soul rest in peace
With profound sorrow
