The news of Christian's passing is incredibly shocking. At the KTH SCS department, I always observed him to be a person of energy and vitality. It's a huge loss for his family and the academic community alike.
I just found out that Cristian had passed and i am saddened and chocked by the news.
Christian supervised my Master Thesis in 2006 and he gave me all the support i needed and so much good advice. He was the one that really sparked my interest in Computer Science with his course in concurrent programming, and doing so he has had a major impact on my carreer.
I am grateful that I got to meet Christian, he was so friendly and supportive and such a good teacher!
Soon two years have now passed since the last time we met, and I am regularly thinking of you Christian; what a good friend and colleague you were. I am right now teaching the compiler course that you taught some years ago, and this reminds me again about your great smile and friendly discussions. Your friend David.
Dear Christian,
so many memories we shared during our time studying in Karlsruhe, finally driving you late at night - after dragging the washing machine down from the 4th floor- in the Ford Transit to Saarbrücken - the next step of your academic career. I'm glad we got the opportunity to meet in Stockholm in 2013. We missed you for our celebration in Karlsruhe in 2015, now - sadly - we miss you, your kindness and your humour, forever.
Dear Christian,
Thank you for having my PhD student Alberto Delgado visiting many years ago. It was a fruitful collaboration. I was just about to check up on your work to learn the sad news. Death is a part of life, but it hurts when it comes too early. I am so sorry for your loss, your family's loss, and the loss for your friends and colleagues.
CP doesn't feel the same without him. I miss his laugh and his smile.
I will never forget his kindness and amazing knowledge. Rest in peace Christian.
I only had Christian as a lecturer for one course but he made a big impact in his warmness to his students, his excitement over the material and his willingness to engage when challenged.
I've spoken to several students who attended that same course with me, and the constant in those conversations were that they all had only kind words to describe Christian.
A true dedicated teacher with passion and patience. May you rest in peace.
Christian, you created the basis of my academic work and something I still would like to bring to full fruition at some time in the future. And you were a great "Bremser" for "Informatik 1" and "Informatik 2" given by Prof. Smolka at Saarland University ;-)
I always hoped I would meet you again some day to achieve something even greater than you achieved anyway, but maybe that takes a little longer now. Rest in peace and all the best to your family. All the very very best.
Ralph
I am deeply saddened by Christrian's demise. Last time we came across eachother near the entrance of KTH while I was rushing to attend a meeting. We greeted eachother and he said, I should visit his office sometime soon and I said not today but it would be very soon. Alas, that moment never came. I got to know Christian when I was part of PhD student council and he briefed me how to evaluate the potential faculty members during the interview. Throughout my PhD studies , he supported me in evaluating the study plans in general and then during the last 6 months in more depth e.g. how to reduce the scope of my work to finish the PhD in time. His help didn't stop there, he also guided me how to make academic CV, write good posters etc... We had our fair share of arguments as well and I loved his straightforwardness. Christian you left us quite early and this void would not he filled. I hope that by applying the ethical values we learned, in the industrial research environment, your legacy would live forever....
I had a warm feeling about Christian even before I got the chance to meet him in person, as so many of the people I look up to and hold dear shared with me their own feelings about Christian as a joyful, compassionate and caring person. I remember Pierre talking about Christian during the Constraint Programming lectures in Uppsala; it was obvious that Pierre regarded Christian not only as a respected college and researcher but also, and especially, as a close friend. Alexandra too shared her joy about having met Christian, where he was a huge source of inspiration and positive energy. Kim too had caring thoughts about Christian, that he balanced intellectual aspects of life with both humor and passion. Once I finally got the chance to meet Christian in person, we instantly "clicked". I could talk with him just like I would an old friend that shares your passion. He had what we call "glimten i ögat" and he could criticize your work in such a way that helped raise you up to become a better researcher and person, all the while having you feel but warmth towards both Christian and the constructive criticism he would give. I know personally that Christian was a great mentor and supervisor as I was fortunate enough to have him believe in me and want to supervise one of my research projects. Christian went out of his ways to help make this possible, as there existed no course at KTH fit for exactly the kind of research I wanted to do, so he created one; and thus I got the privilege of having him as my supervisor. Over time, I also got to share so many joyful aspects of life with Christian as he would give me gentle glimpses into his mind, through the jokes he would write in e-mails, his heartfelt laughter and his endless passion. I feel very sad that Christian is no longer with us, he gave so much of himself to help lift others up, and really showed how deeply people will care for you when you show compassion and take interest in them. You will be missed Christian. *varma kramar* /Robin
Dear Christian,
I just got the news that you are no longer with us. Even though I left KTH 4 years ago I still remember you as my favourite among all the professors I met while working with our websites. Your respect for each and everyones in profession and your great dose of humour were things I really appreciated. Working together with you was always a pleasure. And I will always remember that as one of my good memories from KTH.
Rest in peace
Christian,
It was so fantastic to get to know you. You were an amazing force. In the cooperation we had, there were only opportunities.
Warm greetings
Dear Christian
My favorite Professor. Your smartness, your kindness and your great sense of humour It´s hard to accept never more meeting you in the corridors of SICS. Many of us still talk about the warm and bright aura that always surrounded you. You will be truly missed. <3
Christian - I've known you ever since you first came to Sweden, working with Sverker (my husband). Whenever I've met you at KTH or SICS you've greeted me in the warmest ways, always with a joke, an insight, a caring interaction. KTH is not as fun without you. <3
I worked at KTH for 6 years and some people made an extra big impression on me. You were one of these Christian. Always smiling, great at giving feedback (both good and bad, but most people tend to only focus on the bad and I like that you also told people when they did a good job!) and very appreciative to the admin staff which I belonged to. The corridors must truly be empty without you, but I am sure your memory will live on at KTH. Rest in peace.
Dear Christian,
I first met you three years ago. During these past three years, you had a never ending support and belief in me, which was extremely valuable for me. Thanks to you, I achieved so many things I didnt think I was capable of.
You have made me a better, braver person. I am so sad you cannot be my advisor and friend any more.
Dear Christian,
It was always such a pleasure working with you, both professionally and socially. I especially appreciated the fact that you never looked down on us admin staff, but regarded us as equally important and valuable colleagues. I also enjoyed our codeswitching conversations, with you speaking English, me Swedish and even vice versa with sometimes a bit of German mixed in.
I cannot believe it was only last summer that I emailed you a photo of an Austrian "gasthaus" by the name of "Schulte" from our summer vacation and you replied with a short etymology lesson of the name/word schulte...
You will be missed!
Christian, you were a wonderful colleague and inspiration to many of us! You will be dearly missed. Rest in peace.
Dear Christian, I consider myself lucky for having known you. I am very grateful for your many advises and guidance. The corridors at SCS will always sound empty without your presence. Your laughter, your humour, and your enthusiam, and most of all you are dearly missed. Rest in peace.
Having Christian as research advisor was truly a privilege, and now it is difficult to accept that he is gone.
Christian gladly shared his wisdom, insights and ideas, and he guided using warmth & humor.
But more importantly, he shared his life joy and energy, and meeting Christian meant having a good laugh.
You will be truly missed.
Rest in peace Christian.
It is difficult to believe that Christian is gone to a better world. His curiosity, kindness, frankness and joyfulness will stay with us forever. See you in paradise for speaking about code.
I attended Christian's presentation at Chalmers university back in 2015. He was hands down the best presenter I had seen. I was inspired by his ability to express difficult concepts so fluently. What I learned from him that day was to cheerfully and playfully accept the points and criticisms raised by the audience, instead of being defensive and bitter. It's so sad and unbelievable to hear he is no longer with us.
My thoughts are with his family.
I am really sorry to hear the loss of Christian. It is a very big loss for us in Sweden and so as in the research community. Christian will always be remembered. My deepest sympathies go out to Christian's family during this difficult period.
Danke für die Zeit, die wir mit Dir verbringen durften.
It is hard to accept that my friend and research advisor is gone. I am immensely proud of the work we did together, and the guidance he gave me has shaped me significantly. However, it is my friend Christian that I will miss the most.
15 years ago I applied as a doctoral student with Christian. I had never met him before, but we hit it off immediately. Today, I am the same age as Christian was then, and I feel a responsibility to live up to his good example.
I am grateful that I had the possibility to spend quality time with Christian this year. He was surprised that so many cared about him. I was not.
Rest In Peace Christian.
Dear Christian, I am so grateful for having known you. Thank you for your warm heart, love of life, wisdom and untiring energy. Thank you for letting me share the joy of advising great students. Thank you for all the fun we had and for all the good work we got done. We had so much more of that ahead of us. Rest in peace.
I met Christian at my first CP in 2009, and something that really surprised me is that the next year he remembered my name. He was always nice and joyful, and made me discover cloudberries.
My thoughts go to his family.
I had known Christian since Fall 1991 when I met him at a Dagstuhl seminar
if I remember well.
Although I can't say I really knew him personally, there are two things that come
to my mind:
making useful and available tools for a wide audience beyond people, groups,
industries he knew personaly;
the direct side, but always ready to provide explanations if you also make an effort.
It is with a heavy hand and heartfelt regrets that we write to express our profound sympathies and deepest condolences for the tragic passing of Christian. We are sending our thoughts to his family at this difficult time.
Well never forget Christians. He was a wonderful person, leading his work with passion and humanity. He made every moment enjoyable.
He will stay in a warm place in our hearts.
Rest in peace dear Christian.
Christian has been a wonderful colleague and friend, full of energy and warmth, fun and wisdom, passion and thoughtfulness. His passing is a devastating loss and I will miss him always.
Your departure was so sudden and unexpected. Now, I regret not coming to CP 2019.
I'll remember the beer and the interesting discussions/arguments we had. Thank you for introducing eau de vie to me.
Pal, we have a paper to finish.
May you rest in peace.
Christian, we will miss you badly. Rest in peace.
Thank you Christian, for being a great advisor and person. I'm shocked to hear that you've left us.. You have touched so many people with your warm hearted, supportive and cheerful way, and will always be remembered by that! Thank you for everything!
I am shocked and saddened by this news. It is hard to believe that a colleague so full of life and ideas has been taken from us.
Christian was such a tremendous support to young researchers; always encouraging. He brought a sense of happiness, excitement and optimism to every conversation, and he will be greatly missed.
I remember Christian's first talk at CP'97: It was a fantastic piece of research that had a big impact. I also remember eating with him outside in a cafe in Stockholm in September 2014 and enjoying the Swedish relaxing atmosphere and his love of life. He will be missed tremendously.
Christian's memory if that of joy, wit, and life. I will hold that memory always.
What a terrible loss. I will remember Christian as a supportive supervisor, honest mentor and amazing person. I will remember his kindness, his cheerfulness and his booming laughter. I will miss you, Christian!
I feel extremely lucky to have known Christian. Brilliant educator and a joyful, kind and warm fellow, we will miss him sorely.
May he rest in peace. My prayers are with him, his family and friends.
The most kind and cheerful colleague and friend that will be sorely missed, but remembered. For me and all those who knew him, Christian was an inspiration. May he rest in peace.
What a loss for the scientific community. Your work had a huge influence on all of us.
A wonderful colleague and friend, he will be greatly missed.
Unsterblich ist die Erinnerung an diesen lieben Menschen!
In enger Verbundenheit,
Pierre
One cannot forget his smile, some kind teacher and human, Rest in Peace, Wish you the best from God.
