Happy Birthday Opa xxx
I first met Hermann at Ruskin College in Oxford in the late 1960s where he was introduced to me - a young lecturer - as a postgraduate scholar specialising in the poetry of William Wordsworth. I had no idea then that we would become lifelong friends and in many ways soulmates. Hermann was international in outlook and fiercely democratic but with a wry and sardonic sense of humour that coloured all our subsequent correspondence, meetings, and telephone greetings. Hermann was a true original and I shall miss him greatly.
Today would have been your 86th birthday! Happy Birthday! dearest father Happy Birthday.
Herrmann,
du warst viel unterwegs,
in mehreren Ländern zuhause
What a beautiful funeral. Thank you Helen, Peter, Lily, Cari and others who made it so special for all of us who loved and cared for Hermann.
Hermann was a great friend of my parents and I got to know him early in my life. I have him to thank for many things, including his influence on my interest in the English language. I eventually moved to London from Sweden in my 20s and Hermann helped me with my university applications and resumes.
Throughout my 20s and early 30s I would meet Hermann once or twice a year for a nice sushi meal near Bayswater where he used to stay when travelling to London. We always had a great time and he was full of energy and a childlike enthusiasm for meeting people and discussing all kinds of subjects.
Everyone who attended our wedding in Stockholm five years ago will remember Hermann with great warmth. In a lovely and fun impromptu speech he, among other things, confessed his love for my mother as the woman who got away!
Hermann had an amazing ability to see and appreciate the essence of a person. He really was very perceptive and caring about others.
We will miss him and he will forever have a special place in our hearts.
Even the most sober and scientific mind must be in awe of how beautiful and miraculous our lives are, how wonderous the universe we live in really is. In this light, it is hard to imagine that there isn't something just as beautiful, and wonderous in store after life here.
Forever my lovely, funny and crazy uncle
We grieve for the loss of a very good friend, who from the bottom of his heart cared so much for our family. The emptiness since you passed away is heavy.
We have many friends, but none of them can replace you.

”And hark! how blithe the throstle sings! He, too, is no mean preacher: Come forth into the light of things, Let Nature be your teacher” skriver Wordsworth.

You were my fantastic guide and friend when we both studied in Oxford 1969. And a deep fiendship remained between you and myself and my wife Kerstin during the rest of your life. We miss you.
