My poem to Ciocia Ela
After the first snow of the year fell, under the full moon, you left us.
Our first meeting was in east Berlin.
It was at hotel Berlin. Or was it hotel Berolina?
You told me about that meeting many times, because just as your mother, grandmother Adela, you were a teller. Vivid and colorful stories.
Against all odds you came to Sweden. We shared a room. We danced.
And although you moved a couple of streets away, we met regularly.
I remember your, always white furniture, your budgies.
That to me, in my memory, always had the name Mimmi.
Ceremonies and shoeboxes, Maciej and me. And then came a new budgie, a new Mimmi. In my memory.
Then David was born, and you chose me to be his godmother.
Because you wanted to keep the family together, somehow.
The way you had it.
A lot of crying. A lot of laughter.
I always put flowers, and light a candle on Krzysius grave.
The last time we met, we said we loved each other. Ti amo.
A lot of crying. A lot of laughter.
Echoes in the corridor.
You said: - Let’s continue laughing!
But, after the first snow of the year fell, under the full moon, you left us.
Now the crying continues, but the laughter will always stay in my heart.
Żywe i kolorowe historie.
Wbrew wszystkiemu przyjechałaś do Szwecji. Spaliśmy w jednym pokoju. Tańczyliśmy razem.
I nawet jeżeli potem wyprowadziłaś się kilka ulic dalej - spotkaliśmy się często.
Pamiętam Twoje zawsze białe meble. I papużki.
A potem nowa papużka. Zawsze nowa Mimmi.
Dużo płaczu i dużo śmiechu.
I ja też Tobie to powiedziałam. Ti amo.
Spoczywaj w pokoju.
David and Renee
My deepest condolences for your loss. I never met Elzbieta but I heard so many wonderful stories about her. And if she was anything like David I'm sure we would have gotten along nicely (even with the language difference). She raised a wonderful young man. David has become such a blessed addition to our family and I thank you Elzbieta for him. I have a video on my phone of Renee and David singing happy birthday to my husband in Swedish. I will cherish this always. Rest in peace
I met Elzbieta only once, yet her personality was as big and brash as my daughter, Renee, had described. Despite my best efforts, I found it impossible to keep pace with her boundless energy during our short conversation. I will be forever grateful to her for embracing Renee as part of her family so completely and with open arms. Rest in peace.
Będzie mi brakować naszych rozmów, twoich świątecznych kartek/ wypełnionych zdjęciami i informacjami o najbliższych. Zawsze będziesz w moich myślach i do zobaczenia po drugiej stronie.
Vi saknar dig ❤️❤️❤️
Vila i frid
Vila i frid ❤️
Cioca Ela.
I never got to “hug” Elzbieta but she touched my life in many lovely, wonderful ways. From our facetimes and “pen pal” correspondences, I got a strong sense of her playful, up beat personality. Eternal peace, Elzbieta
Kram ❤️
Vill tacka för all stöttning till mina döttrar, trots din svåra sjukdom orkade du stötta andra. Livet är inte rättvist! Vila i frid!
Vila i frid Elzbieta 🕊️
Our lilla mamma Elzbieta was the most absurd person in all the best ways. A few months into dating, I showed up at David’s apartment, and he said, “MY MOM IS HERE. SHE DOESN’T SPEAK ENGLISH.” Then, in typical David fashion, he promptly walked away and left us alone. She never once judged me and always tried to make things work “på lätt svenska,” reassuring me with “jag förstår vad hon menar,” even when she probably didn’t always understand. And so began the assembly of a shared lexicon built on a lot of love and very questionable grammar. She would pronounce something oddly, we’d make fun of her for it, and it would become our newest inside joke, like having a “bra boo-JET.” She embraced the silliest sayings into our vocabulary: hello was always “hej snygging,” and goodbye was always “puss och kram och ses på stan.” Recently, I told her to “slida det” while sliding open a box, not realizing “slida” means “coochie.” Naturally, she started yelling “SLIDA” at me whenever possible. What is the fun in learning a language if you can't laugh at yourself after all? Elzbieta was always good for that. Despite living in Sweden for over 40 years, she never learned the difference between “äntligen” and “egentligen” (but honestly, neither have I). Over the last eight years, I built a vast dictionary of words, phrases, and mistranslations with the woman responsible for why I learned (questionable) Swedish in the first place. We both moved to this country as adults, and, in that, shared a deep empathy for the highs and lows of building a life in a new country. I loved her independently of being David’s mom because I understood and deeply respected what she had gone through to get here. But, of course, she was also David’s mother, directly responsible for shaping my best friend and favorite person to be around. Like David, she was silly, offering levity when you needed it most, yet carried a quiet consideration for others in everything she did. She loved her grandkids and kids, by blood or by circumstance, loudly and fiercely — and often with too many emojis in all of her texts because her love for Alice, Elna, Daniel, Diana, Maciej, and David simply could not be contained. We will miss her dearly.
VILA I FRID KÄRA ELZBIETA
INGA
Inget farväl
Inga medvetna ord.
